The causes and signs of mixing oil and water inside the engine

By, 2021-10-16

The engine is the most important part of the car at all, and it includes many vital parts, oil and fluids are among the factors that strongly affect the engine high efficiency.

The work of the oil is summarized in lubricating the internal parts of the engine, preventing friction between its parts, and absorbing suspended impurities, while the water cools the engine, and maintains its temperature in the normal amount for it.

Despite their importance, in the event of their mixing, they cause many problems and malfunctions for the car.

Given the seriousness of this problem, we present to you today the main reasons that lead to the mixing of oil and water in the engine, with an indication of the signs of their mixing together.

First, the reasons for mixing oil with water in the engine:

  1. Damage to the oil cooler: The oil cooler is exposed to damage due to overuse or the end of its life span, which may lead to cracks in the coolant, and then the oil leaks into the coolant.
  2. Engine block crack: The engine block crack occurs as a result of a defect in the cooling and lubrication process inside the engine, which causes oil to leak into the water in the radiator.
  3. Cylinder head crack: The cylinder head is sometimes cracked due to high temperatures or as a result of traffic accidents, and this crack leads to an error in directing the radiator water path, which may lead to mixing with oil in the long run.
  4. Damage to the gasket of the engine: The gasket is a thin part of the metal that closes the upper part of the engine, and works to prevent the leakage of water or oil from the engine to the outside.

Second, the most prominent signs of mixing oil with water:

  1. The color of the radiator fluid changed to copper
  2. The color of the oil inside the engine increased and its density increased
  3. The engine temperature increased significantly and continuously
  4. The engine sound changed with turbulence and vibration during rotation
  5. A constant decrease in the radiator water level
  6. The appearance of fumes and smoke from the engine room.
